Artificial Intelligence (A.I) software has been around for years, but recently it has made its way into publicly available tools used for art, design, writing, programming and game world creation. Exploring the opportunities as well as the risks of this significant shift in digital creation, we will look at some examples and consider the potential consequences for creators.

Since the rise of the MeToo movement in the mid-2010s, masculinity has re-entered the cultural conversation with force. On the left, masculinity is often seen as a problem and rarely referenced without “toxic” as a modifier. Men simply need to shape up and stand down.
On the right, a pro-male movement has bubbled up in response. Men simply need to own their dominance and take charge.

Should I stay or should I go? Reflections on decision making & commitment

It is not big news that most of us struggle to make decisions, whether it is big ones, like "Which Study Should I Follow", or smaller ones, like picking one option from the restaurant menu! But the time and place we live in usually adds perspectives or challenges. For example: an overload of data and options may result in a paralysis of choice. Increasing distrust in leaders, institutions and media brings more insecurity to this process. Now we also hear of a post-pandemic label for GEN-Z: "The disengaged generation".

In this lecture we will reflect on how the pandemic affected our abilities to make decisions and commit. How do fear and trust play an important role in this process? What does the bible have to say about it?

”Substantial Healing”: een holistisch evangelie

In de l’Abri traditie hebben we het vaak over Schaeffers uitspraak ‘substantial healing’: dat we in een herstelde relatie met God door Jezus en de Heilige Geest, het leven in het hier en nu een behoorlijke – al is het onvolledig – genezing en vooruitgang mogen kennen. In deze lezing kijken we eerst naar de redenen waarom we in zo’n groei mogen geloven vanuit Gods openbaring, en daarna naar de hedendaagse vormen waardoor we het mogen meemaken: dieet, sport, de natuur en vriendschap. Kortom: hoe spelen gebed, geloof, gezondheid en gemeenschap allemaal een rol in de holistische werkelijkheid van wat God ons in het evangelie aanbiedt?

About time: the blessings and limitations of living in the present

It is common to hear that 'depression is an excess of the past and anxiety is an excess of the future'. But is there an 'excess of the present'? Many leading best-sellers emphasize the importance of living in the present. Practices such as 'Mindfulness' exist to help us connect with the present. Even I constantly talk about the importance of the present with l'Abri guests. What does the constant pursuit and exaltation of the present reveal about our society, and what does the Bible have to teach us about our relationship with time?

Van een psychologisch standpunt zijn gezonde en ongezonde angsten van elkaar te onderscheiden. We hoeven niet van alle vormen van angst af te willen komen; het punt is of het gerechtvaardigd is (of niet). En toch horen we vaak dat onze verlossing - in persoonlijke ontwikkeling, in carrière keuzes, of letterlijk in het geloof - voornamelijk een 'bevrijding van angst' bevat. Om verwarring te vermijden kunnen we opnieuw naar de Bijbelse visie luisteren: daar horen we dat het probleem niet angst is per se maar onwaarheid. Hoe kunnen we dit dan het beste aanpakken?

Overwegingen naar aanleiding van het recente boek 'Ziel zoekt zin' van Pauline Weseman. Er wordt in deze bundel interviews gezocht naar een nieuw soort christendom dat zich baseert op in de ziel ervaren zin. Het stelt mij voor de uitdaging hoe die ervaringen bij mij zijn. De apostel Paulus heeft daar ook mee gezeten. Het voelt soms aan als een uitdaging om bij wijze van spreken 'uit de kast te komen' (1 Korintiers 12:1-13).

In de bijbel wordt het grootste gebod van de wet ook wel het gebod van de liefde genoemd, samengevat als: 'Heb God lief boven alles en uw naaste als uzelf.' Ik denk dat de meesten van ons dat wel graag zouden willen doen. En toch lukt het ons niet om zo lief te hebben als we zouden willen. Wat staat ons hier in de weg, en is er ook een uitweg, terug naar beter liefhebben?

De benadering van de Internal Family Systems therapie geeft hierover interessante inzichten, die wonderbaarlijk goed aansluiten bij wat de bijbel ons hierover leert.

In the last decade the word 'purpose' has become trendy and even overused in work environments. Most companies have realized the power of this word and have attempted to bring a higher purpose or cause into their mottos. In his bestseller Start with Why, coach Simon Sinek inspired people and businesses not to focus only on what or how you are doing something, but why.
The next step in this journey is to match your individual purpose with the purpose of a company, a move which seems to promise a happy and successful life. But does it really? In this lecture we will reflect on this movement - its good and bad implications - and the concepts of vocation, calling and purpose. What does it mean that humans have a longing to do meaningful work?
